Historically, posters have been a way for people to share information on a large scale. With this in mind, I wanted my Artcrank PDX posters to express an important message and to carry with them a moving voice seen in a simple and subtle way. The question I hoped to answer in this poster was how and why the bicycle has won the hearts of so many including myself. By doing this, I hoped to build a voice for the poster that was bigger than my own. The initial design idea came to me after reading an anthology called the Literary Cyclist. In the introduction the editor asks “What is the moon? What is the stars?...What is the bicycle?” and I thought... “What IS the bicycle!?”. To me it is more than a machine, more than a piece of metal with bits of rubber, cork, and plastic on it. For me the bicycle is a constant reminder of movement. I decided to ask those people around me who LOVE bicycles what is was for them that hooked them on cycling. I asked friends that I rode with, my fellow bike mechanic co-workers, my bicycle fit school instructor, my grandmother (who at the age of 79 still rides a tricycle), and still others I encountered riding their bikes on the Portland streets. From their responses I gathered specific words that came up again and again. These words became the movement of the bicycle... they became the wheels.
